A physical exam is essential, but it only tells us part of the story. Blood work provides valuable information about your cat’s internal health, including red and white blood cells, platelets, kidney and liver function, and other important organ markers. We use state-of-the-art IDEXX in-house analyzers so we can obtain results quickly and make informed decisions about your cat’s care.
Heart disease can be difficult to detect in cats because many cats show few or no obvious symptoms until disease has progressed. For appropriate patients, we may recommend IDEXX Cardiopet proBNP, a blood test that helps screen for cardiac stress and possible underlying heart disease.
This simple blood test can provide valuable information about your cat’s heart health and help determine whether additional evaluation, such as an echocardiogram, may be recommended.
Cats age much faster than we do, and their health can change significantly in a relatively short period of time. For senior cats, we recommend complete wellness examinations at least twice a year, along with routine laboratory screening.
As cats get older, preventive care becomes less about simply keeping vaccinations current and more about monitoring overall health, detecting disease early, and maintaining quality of life.
